High Blood Pressure Medication – ACE Inhibitors
One common form of high blood pressure medication today is a group of drugs known as ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitors. These drugs work by blocking the formation of a chemical which is naturally produced within the body and which acts to narrow the blood vessels. Another similar class of drugs also used for treating high blood pressure are angiotensin II receptor blockers which do not block the formation of this chemical but act to block its action. Both classes of drugs are especially useful for people who also suffer from kidney failure, coronary artery disease or heart failure. Both ACE inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor blockers tend to be less effective in black people and so are often prescribed in combination with diuretics for this group of high blood pressure sufferers.
