Counseling, Alcohol Abuse, and Domestic Violence
The research literature demonstrates that alcohol abuse and domestic violence are associated. When alcohol abuse and domestic violence are problems in a relationship, however, what should be done? Stated more precisely, what should a person do who is involved in a relationship in which alcohol abuse and domestic violence have manifested themselves? I assert that when either alcohol abuse or domestic violence or both emerge in a relationship, the drinker, the abuser, and the abused person need to get immediate professional counseling. The bottom line: in order for a positive relationship to continue, the alcohol abuse AND the domestic violence have to stop. Without professional treatment, it is highly unlikely that either the alcohol abuse or the physical abuse will cease.
